>> La Casa Embrujada is the first spanish that I have read. It's a mystery novel about a haunted house. I liked the book but I did not like Pepino. He's a famous Mexican detective. Unfortunately, Pepino is very chauvinistic so I did not like him. His assistant, Panzón, is also very chauvinistic. He told misogynistic jokes and I thought they were inappropriate and untrue. <<

Besides the mildly offensive characterization of these Spanish protagonists, I enjoyed the novel. The story was intentionally written for students studying the language and I thought it was very well-done in that context. The storyline really picked up towards the end of the book and I was actually surprised when we neared the resolution.

Probably the best of the series, since Pepino's actually semi-intelligent in it and solves it through a bit of skill. The others in the series are just a lot more corny and predictable. Very reminiscent of Inspector Clouseau from Pink Panther; incredibly arrogant while often bumbling his way to the answer, along with his sidekick Panzon who likes to eat all the time. Great way to learn and practice Spanish!

I read this for my high school Spanish class. It was silly and sometimes annoying, but it did a good job of introducing new vocab words and grammar constructions.
